I'm a farm girl stuck in town and finally convinced DH that raising a few chickens in our backyard would be fun! So, where can I get a nice variety of unique looking, good laying pullets? I'm only going to get 4, so I don't want to place an order online, and the local farm stores usually get all of one breed.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Check out the BST forum, you can post a Want Ad after you have 20 posts https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/67/buy-sell-trade Meyer/My Pet chicken do have small (3 chick) minimum orders this time of year. SD doesn't have a really active thread but you could ask if anyone knows of any more feed stores locally that will be getting in chicks (usually the chain stores like TSC will get at least three or four breeds in) https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/643368/east-river-south-dakota/0_20

This is a great place to start networking with fellow chicken-heads in your area which may open up some options to source your birds so that you can have the variety you are looking for, though as Kelsie said above, most of the retailers (farm stores) I have dealt with (both as an employee and as a customer) offer a fairly wide selection of breeds this time of year. Perhaps you would find a better selection if you find the individual(s) responsible for the chick orders at the locations you have available to you and find out when their shipments come in, etc to avoid visiting on a day when most of the birds have already been taken leaving only a few or one breed to choose from. Chicks, especially the most desired breeds, can go VERY quickly often selling out within hours of arrival at the store.
