HELP!! Newborn chick with blood from its bum?!

Thanks SurferchickinSB! No no I'm not picking anything! I'm leaving it as is! Trouble is she's not fluffing up in the incubator as humidity is still quite high at 78%, but that's better than being with other chicks in the brooder I guess...

This one had taken 24hours from the external pip RoosterML! It pipped last night, then half zipped today and then got stuck re the dry membranes. But I hear you re not worrying about the blood, thank you!! I've taken another picture and think the bloody bit can be seen more clearly there. Does that look like the umbilical cord?! I can’t see anything in the picture but I am sure it is the umbilical cord. Go to the search button on this site and type in baby chick umbilical cord and you’ll find a lot of different threads on that. You will know when you find the pictures if that is what you are seeing. I don’t think it is anything to worry about unless the other chicks pull it. You said the eggshell completely dried out because she was trying to hatch for so long, so maybe her butt got stuck to the membrane and it pulled the umbilical cord.

@ziggy7777 sometimes they look wet but it’s not “wet” just dried who knows what. I usually take them out once to much pin balling in going on in the incubator and I usually leave the one that looks the wettest behind until next removal. Some will fluff right up and others won’t . :idunno Just keep an eye on that area but I wouldn’t worry to much. Also even with a dry membrane which usually happens after the pip starts and takes awhile to zip regardless I still do not mess with anything.

The pictures are hard to see, but I think your chick looks great. I agree with RoosterML and surferchickin, your humidity will bump up, and the chick will be lethargic regardless, so dont worry. Some chicks take a couple days to fluff out.
This is extreme, but I've attached pics. The big lump protruding is unabsorbed yolk, and the red string is umbilical cord. Umbilical cord will dry up, it's perfectly normal. The pic with the small red bump is the chick I was talking about. I had her separate from the other chicks her first week so the bump didn't get pecked at, and I put antibiotic ointment on it just in case. She absorbed it after a week.
At first hatch a tiny bit of blood is normal, from the umbilical cord. Has she stopped bleeding? I really wouldn't worry as long as shes not bleeding. Sometimes the spot on the rump where the umbilical cord attaches needs a little time to harden; most chicks have a tiny black "plug" on that spot.

Thank you SurferchickinSB! I'm going to go search for pics re umbilical cords asap! Yes!! The membranes were completely dry and she was trying for such a long time. She's way more exhausted than the other two chicks at the moment, but resting so fingers crossed!

RoosterML thank you! I think I have a lot to learn! This is all incredibly fascinating, complicated and fragile! I'll keep an eye on the area for sure! There's no active bleeding at the moment and the chick is resting so that seems positive...!

Raptorchick thank you! Ooooh really?! So it's normal for chicks to be lethargic?!! Aaaah! Didn't know that! YES!!! That's exactly what this chick's bum looks like except with a tiny speck of dried blood in the middle and protruding a bit less than that pic; but yeah that!! So that's an umbilical cord?!! Ah! Yes she has stopped bleeding thank goodness and is resting now. Would you still put antibiotic ointment on it just to be safe?

Personal opinion, I think it'll dry up on it's own, I don't think mine needed the ointment but it was just a precaution. If its smaller than what I had, she will be fine. Maybe just watch to be sure other chicks aren't pecking at it, that could cause problems. But I really think it'll scab over on it's own :) agreed, chicks are SO fragile and complicated lol
