help! not sure egg is fertile

my friends and I were given a duck egg and were told it was 5-7 days away from hatching. we are supposed to keep it alive and hatch it, but we don't think there's even an embryo in there. I tried candling it using my phone flashlight and nothing really showed up (not sure if it is strong enough though). I see no veins or air bubble. I am not exactly sure what to look for; we have never done this before. I put it in lukewarm water to see what would happen and it sank. at this point I am pretty sure we are just being messed with but I want to be sure. Is there another way I can be certain there is nothing in there? Thank you!

You would see veins and reddish coloring, and also a very massive shadow by now. There was never anything in this egg. Just rotten at this point.
