Hi,
Our 8 month old Belgium d’uccle is very unwell and we think we need to put her down.
A couple of weeks ago we noticed she had a limp wing which we think she injured by trying to fly up onto the clothes line and failing.
Recently we had moved the chickens coop next to the clothes line which is on the side of the house and the chickens had quickly discovered they could fly onto it to perch of a night time.
Two days before we noticed her limp wing, I noticed she was not perched on the clothes line with her two sisters and was inside her coop instead. I remember thinking that it must be getting too chilly of a night and that’s why she was there so I moved the other two into the coop with her.
Then when I saw her wing, it made sense as to why she was there and not with her sisters as she couldn’t fly up there and I assume she injured it attempting to the two days before.
We monitored her over the weekend after noticing her wing and she was eating and drinking normal and could still walk around but she was resting a lot and not foraging as much.
At the vet, they checked her wing and couldn’t feel any fractures or other injury and said they would need to do an x-ray to check her further. The cost to do this was a bit hefty so we decided to take her home and see how she goes with pain meds and hopefully heal on her own.
She continued to eat and drink and move around but over the past week now she’s been mostly sitting in 1-3 different spots in the yard and that’s it. So very minimal.
She’s also been leaning to the right a lot and has been unable to put much pressure on her left foot which is the same side as the limp wing.
Now this morning, she has gotten so much worse and can’t stand at all and falls over forward when trying to move. It’s so bad that I think she’s going to hurt or break her neck and it’s quite distressing to see.
I was able to give her some food and water from my hand which I think is a good sign but she wouldn’t be able to get to it on her own now.
I feel so bad that we couldn’t pay the price at the vet to try and find out more and now she is in a real bad way.
Has anyone been through something similar? Is it time to put her down? I’m so sad about it.
Also to note: her two sisters are very healthy and energetic unlike her and she has been pooping fine too.
