She has agreed to necropsy any others that die. I really do think it is due to the mites. Aenemia would cause the weakenss and many of the other symptoms she has described. She looked at several more of her birds last night and they are all covered in lice, mites, eggs. They began treatment last night and will treat the coops this weekend.
I learned that lesson the hard way. I brought home a couple of chicks from a swap and popped them in the brooder with my others. Whatever those two chicks had killed every chick in the entire brooder within a week. They looked healthy when I got them, but started sneezing within 24 hours. Luckily there were only a few in there and it was only the brooder that was infected instead of the entire flock.I totally agree. A heavy infestation of mites/lice can severely weaken and eventually kill birds. And of course weakened immunity predisposes them to other disease and illness as well. Nasty cycle. I hope she is able to get it under control, not an easy thing at all and requires a lot persistence.
I hope she will also consider your advice on quarantine of new birds but I understand what you say about her response to that! Many people don't take quarantine seriously until they bring home something really nasty and permanently infect their whole flock and their property. Sad.
