HELP PLEASE CHICKEN DOWN

There have been studies that show a vitamin supplement can be given with the Sulmet or Di-Methox as they are not true folate blockers. Similar, but not quite. I would do this on a bird to bird case. If I had a bird that was totally wrung out from the cocci, then yes I would give an vitamin along with the sulpha drug. In the case of a bird showing the normal symptoms of resistant cocci, was not at death's door, then you are right and they shouldn't be given the vitamins and risk having them not work completely.

I did have to make this decision last year with mine and did give vitamins to 4 birds that had no chance without them. 1 died from the cocci on day one of the treatment, but the rest healed and are still alive. I used the 4 day treatment with the Sulmet at that time.
Yes,i am aware of the differences between the drugs. In the above mentioned case, giving the vitamins along with Corid,is why chickens did not respond to treatment. I always caution on the use of vitamins for this very reason.

I try and make my answers as simple and precise as possible,so that there is no misunderstanding or confusion about directions on drug use. If i were to say,you can use vitamins with Sulfonamide drugs(sulfamethazine-Sulmet/sulfadimethoxine-Di-Methox),my concern is that there would be confusion and the result would be chickens not responding to treatment and dying.

Haunted55 My local guy Ray at Producers Vet Supply hasn't been able to get the sulmet and told me that it's been on back-order indefinitely. I'll try to order from Jeffers, I've used them before, they ship pretty quickly. In the mean time I'll switch from the yogurt to buttermilk if that is the better choice. I also just started giving him a homeopath extract....bee propolis mixed with yogurt and a super B complex vitamin and super lysine echinacea shiitake mushroom extract (immune system builder). These are things I have in my household anyway. I've seen bee propolis work miracles for my horses. It is an anti-viral, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial extract. Little cock is holding his own, his crop is full and I massage it a little, until he burps?, keep him warm and clean. He looks at me every once in a while with surprised awareness, but mostly his eyes stay closed. Thanks for your help

Be careful of the Lysine, it's one that build to dangerous levels. I just grabbed this for you, it does have some indications of dosing, but remember they also add it normally to their feed so you'll need that info as well.

The bee propolis ia also loaded with B vitamins as well. Just err on the side of caution....too much of a good thing can cause it's own problems especially as your birds are showing symptoms of Coccidiosis. The coccidia need the thiamine from the Bs to go through their reproduction and life. In your case I would keep the amounts of Bs down until you can get the sulpha.
