We are first time chicken owners and we have six hens three were born in April last year and three were born in July and we brought them home and only one of them were laying but now even she has stop laying. We are currently feeding our ladies pellets oyster shells and some scraps. Also our barred rock hen who is the largest of all of our ladies is starting to Crow

Do you have pictures of your barred rock? Sometimes the dominant hen will crow but with her being bigger than all the others I would be suspicious it is a rooster. Hens usually take the winter off when they are not getting enough light. You could try feeding them a higher protein feed, as the protein sometimes gets them laying, as well as try offering high protein treats like mealworms. Hens also generally need about 14 hours of daylight to get them laying.

I also wanted to add that if that other bird you posted, the spitzhauben, is one of your birds that one is a rooster and will, of course, not lay eggs :P

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! X2, can you post pictures of your flock. How long have you had the birds? If you just got the hens recently (not sure from your post) it is not unusual for them to quit laying for a couple of weeks or a month or more as they adjust to their new home.

I will get a picture of our barred rock tomorrow I believe its a female as we don't see Spurs on it and it's got a very fluffy underside. But we've had them for about six weeks now and the first day we got here our Rhode Island red girl laid right away and pretty much every day up until about ten days ago. I will definitely try the mealworms would a scratch block help too? Or omega three? Also regarding the spitzhauben we were just curious of their name as we'd seen a beautiful picture of a rooster and wanted to know the breed. We are considering ordering some for next year to raise if this year goes well.
