Help Please - Do I need to be an expert to remove spurs?

No, you don't have to file. Yes, that is the main reason to trim spurs, to help save your hens backs. They will still get tore up from the claws, but at least the spurs won't be doing it. If you are trimming a young bird, make sure you don't try to trim immature spurs. If it is just a stag, file the ends of the spurs blunt, don't cut them.

Depends on the breed, but probably too young to cut, you would be better off to blunt them right now. Spurs need to be fully hard, and growing out, not cone shaped, to need cut, which is how they are on mature birds.

What does that mean?
