New to the site myself as well. I've always browsed for answers, but never signed up til tragedy struck and I lost my Mango Bird a couple of days ago to a predator. I have a year old male Mallard and need to give him a sister/girlfriend back. I've also started a thread about incorporating him with a newb. Does anyone have any good breed recommendations? I LOVED my Giant Pekin, she is irreplaceable so this is what I am considering again. Dabby is a a gentle, tame, mild mannered sweet boy and she was the bossy loud one. I would like another Pekin, but does anyone have any other recommendations or advice for matching him up successfully after losing the love of his life? A new breed may be fun and different. I'm def overthinking it, but they will be with me for 20 years : ) Something fun and domesticated and social and friendly like he would be nice. They are all so special, but such a gamble and this was my first year and my first pair so I would like to hear other people's experiences to make a good decision. Thanks in advance!

Hi, where are you located? I had just one female mallard alone for a winter some years back, with a mirror, and she became a lot more personable with me during that time, and even hung out with the cat. She had lost her mate in the fall, and it was hard to get another duck in the winter months. I ended up raising a bunch of babies, and being a female, it wasn't a problem to introduce her to them at about 9 weeks. I don't know about a male though. In your case, I would spend as much time with your boy until you find him a friend. A mirror helped a lot too.

If it were me and I wanted something other than a mallard for your mallard drake, I would definitely look for a white or pretty colored Muscovy duck (hen). If you think Muscovys are all ugly, youtube search French White Muscovy Ducks and watch Jon's video at WOWSA Farms. It sold me (I now have "several") and I bet it will sell you too.
