I have a new baby that had a little mushy naval when first hatched now it's bright red and getting bigger. I moved it out of bator cuz other babies were pecking at it. Is there anything I can do for this lil one?

Awww, poor lil' thing! I have only seen one chick hatch like that & it had to be culled. The only other thing you could try is to push everything back in & close the tear in the skin with superglue. But you could only be putting off the inevitable, it may have other health problems that will keep it from thriving. In nature this one's purpose would be to nourish another animal higher up the food chain. Sort of the chicken's way of paying taxes to Mother Nature. But it's your chick & maybe someone else has a better suggestion as to what could be done for it.

There are other threads discussing the quickest, most humane way to cull chicks. I'm sorry for you both.

this has happend to one of my chicks i left it for about a day and no progress was made so it had to be culled this happens if you want i would let it be alone for a while and see what happensand if no progress is made within a day or so its time to say good bye good luck i know how hard it is

That appears to be peri-rectal (cloacal) prolapse which is difficult to treat in chickens or fish. Since it has become dessicated it is unlikely to become a functional organ. Despite the fact we all like our chicks to survive, you're talking about spending an inordinate amount of time on it and taking away time from the others, all for a $3.00 animal.

Sometimes, it's just a tough love situation.

I think this is what they call a "rough naval". Things didn't get taken completely into the body before hatching. I had one like this, and it turned out to be a very weak chick. Not eating, drinking, and growing like the rest. When it got to the point that I could tell it would not survive, I culled. BUT! I have heard from someone else who's chick had this condition and turned out fine. The thing dried up, sealed off, and eventually fell off. The chick grew up normally. I would just leave it alone and try to keep it clean and dry. It will be obvious after a couple of days if the chick is not doing well. Good luck!
