Help please!! I think my chickens just ate rat bait!

Most rat and mouse poisons don't cause neurological damage, they contain warfarin or another anticoagulant that causes the animal to bleed to death internally.

Well, it is still a slow, and probably painful, death. I don't use rat poison, period. It bothers me.

You have the option of calling a vet. There is a medication they will give cats and dogs when they eat rat poison that saves them(Thanks AHappychick for educating me on that one).

If they were mine I would isolate the ones I thought got a large dose in a box and give plenty of water to her. IF there is enough of the toxin than any bump could kill her until the stuff works through her system.

If she was only able to eat a few pellets than I wouldn't worry, especially if they were old. It's not concentrated enough to kill a full size chicken with just a couple bites.

Well all is good now, they're all tucked up asleep.

When hubby got home I told him and he said he'd swept up the steps last weekend, so hopefully if they did find one or two pellets, then thats all they found.

I gave them a big drink of fresh milk before sunset and will check on them first thing tomorrow

The majority of rat poisons are anti-coagulants which require multiple ingestions to cause sufficient quantity of the chemical to cause hemorraging. There are neurotoxins on the market that are sold as single dose poisons but I think your chickens would already be dead if they got hold of them. If you can't visit a vet, I would just leave them be. You may cause more harm than the poison if you try some home remedy.

Call a vet for additional advice.
I will never ever use poison for reasons just like this.
I hope fervently they will be okay.
