1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.)
Chicken, could be about 6 months old.
2) What is the behavior, exactly.
Yesterday I noticed her sitting in their shelter, thought maybe she was going to lay. She eventually came out, no egg, I think she seemed normal. This morning I went out to check and water and she was standing around head tucked by shoulder making no attempt to stay dry (melting ice and some light rain) sitting somewhat hunched horizontally and tail down. No normal interest in what I was doing. She has a coating of poop on the feathers under her vent and seemed to be straining/pulsing. I saw her pass white runny poop twice.
3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms?
She seemed a little off yesterday, but not like this.
4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms?
No. But we did have three birds in this enclosure sick last year. Suspecting Marek's. Two were limping, one had large tumors. One died naturally, we culled the other two when they were sick about 4-5 weeks later.
5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma.
Have not examined that closely yet.
6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation.
We are in the process of switching from DuMore Layer Feed to Purina Flock Raiser. There are two pullets in the enclosure. One has started to lay recently. Not sure which. There was an egg yesterday.
7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all.
Unknown
8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc.
Runny white, some on her backside is greenish brown
9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far?
So far I have just brought her into the house to get her warm and dry. She's laying quietly in a darkened tote.
10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet?
Will be treating at home. Can run to TSC for supplies.
11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help.
Not at this time, sorry
12) Describe the housing/bedding in use
We've been keeping this group of birds in a large dog crate wrapped with a tarp. They have a fenced run area as well. Pine shavings for bedding which do need to be changed (putting it off in the cold weather
)
My first thought is to give her a bath with Epsom salts to clean up her backside and then check to see if she's having trouble with a first egg? Maybe soft-shelled first egg?
