I just got my chicks today about an hour and a half ago. They all look healthy and are active and eating and drinking. I checked all their bottoms for pasty butt. I thought one of them had it, but instead it looks like there is a little brown dried clump below the vent and coming off that is a little "thready" thing. I think I read on here once that that could be the umbilical cord still attached and not to pull on it. I didn't do anything but wanted to ask you all what you thought and if I should be worried. This particular chick seems to be fine otherwise. Any help would be appreciated. I did a quick search and couldn't find what I thought I'd read before. I'll post photos on my BYC page of my new little girls soon. They are SO cute!

Do any of the rest of you have any experience with this?

Yeah 2 of my newly chicks had their umbilicals still attached. Nothing to worry about just leave them be.

My Pet Chicken says:
Some baby chicks will arrive to you with an intact, attached umbilical cord. It looks like a very thin black string, attached to their rear. For heaven's sake, don't pull it! It's not "pasting up"! Just leave it alone. It will fall off within a day or two. Pulling it can really injure them.

So it sounds like your chickie will be fine if left on her own. Congratulations.
