Help/please look at chicks picture

Nothing sound crazy to me, I was told to cull a bird for a broken leg, I get her better and she is fine today. I figured out where it was broken and made my own cast for her.

My only question is, how tight and wouldn't it hurt her to get it off, or did you cut the feathers/fuzz off first?

Not if you fold the tape where the sticky sides in-that way the non sticky side is on the inside of the neck "brace" She looks like she dehydrated too. Is she warm enough? try and see if she will munch on warm chick food wetted down with some vitamin drops added-that way any tiny bit of food she gets in her is the best it can be

You can fold the tape like sonew said. I just put it around the neck and cut it off. It came off very easily. If not, you'll have to cut the feathers around the neck. Best way would be to fold the tape.

I hope she is warm enough cuz I am sweating so bad. you gonna laugh, she is in my bra so I can keep her from going over cuz she has a hard time getting up.

I am gonna try more water with vitamins, she is really giving me a hard time over the water and food, but maybe if I give her her brace she will do it. I think she doesn't like the water cuz you know how they tip their heads up when drinking, well she seems to not want to do that.

And you can pick on me about the chick in the bra, I heard a lot last year when I went shopping with one in my bra. The funniest part is when you see other people trying to figure out where the noise is coming from!

Try the poly vi sol (sp) infant drops with no iron. The vits in the water is good IF they're drinking enough, but it doesn't sound like your chick is so I think you would be better off putting the vitamins directly on her beak. Good luck with her.

I don't think anybody HERE thinks your crazy for having a sick chick in your bra--you might get some strange looks if you leave her there when you go to pick up the vitamins though.

Well the only vitamin I have is the one from the feed store that you put in the water. I will have to wait until hubby gets home from work to get the other stuff.

I tried the duct tape. she still is going back so I guess I don't have it tight enough? There isn't much room and I am afraid if I do it tight I will hurt her.

Here is just a thougt, do you think she hurt her neck in the feeder? I saw some of them sticking their whole head inside, maybe she got stuck last night?

Kittymomma
Thanks for not thinking I am crazy, you should have seen the looks I got last year when I did it. lol

Maybe she got stomped on? It happens sometimes:-( tighten teh brace a little more-remember theres alot of fluff in that area so it may seem tight but really isnt-the fluff is holding it from fitting properly--trim the fluff right down to the neck skin then do the brace?

Thanks for asking but she died.

I stayed up all weekend trying to take care of her and other chicks. I am down to 4 out of 25 chicks and I think 1 more is gonna go. I had swelled heads, bloody eyes, some had blood in the nose and throat. Some their heads were twitching or shaking back and forth.

I paniced and thought it was my fault. But when I calmed down, how could I have overheated them. I have done this in June and it is a lot hotter then. the only difference is I run a fan. We have only been in the 60's not 80's. So it is either the hatchery or Post office. I am leaning towards the post office because how else could they have head trama?

So sorry your chickie died!

Sounds like if you lost that many, there was some trauma with shipping. When did you get them? I would contact your hatchery and see what they say. Most of them have a guarantee about making sure the chicks make it. I know that won't replace the ones you lost but maybe you can get new ones shipped ASAP?

So sorry, I was really hoping she'd pull thru for you. That is just horrible about your whole batch of chicks.

Definetly contact the hatchery and perhaps your county ag extention office too so you can see who in your area does necropsy. I know a lot of states don't charge to have necropsy done and many others are very low cost. I wouldn't usually think about it for chicks, but this case is extreme.
