I have one last question before I cull...

When they go down on the splits, are they able to get back up again and walk before going down again.

Juicy started doing the splits again today, chirping wildly, before pulling his legs back together and stilt walking around. The left one still seems to go forward.

He could do this on and off until the disease have affected so bad that he would be down permanently, then you have to have food right there by his beak in order for him to eat as well as water. Sometimes they can die by drowning in there water. But it does sound like he is progress is getting worst.

I have to find a way to do this without causing bleeding. The best I can think of is drowning.

He is so pretty, its heartbreaking to put him down. I had dreamed of having a silkie for so long. I guess I'll have to only have vaccinated chicks from hatcheries because if it is truely Mareks, which Im pretty sure it is now, I cant risk having chicks that are unvaccinated. Even if they are, theres no sure thing about it., but at least I can hope.

I just hope it doesnt get out to Frightful, Crackers, Dragon, Feathers, Nugget and Raven.

You might not have to cull your whole batch. My hen that got it was with the others until she died and no other symptoms have popped up in my other hens. I'm not sure if 's the very best way but you might b able to burn the body to get rid of it. I believe that high temp levels can kill viruses like with the Plague. I'm so sorry for your peep!

You can just scrub yourself off and go back to your girls, something is bound to happen at some point, can't gert rid of a whole flock for 1 thing. Best of luck to you!

Well there's a few ways you can do this, one is to put him in a closed box or bag and turn on the car and let the exhaust go into the box or bag, he will fall asleep and die. or you can do the twisting of the neck, quick and not messy. YEK, not a personal favorite. or if you are a shooter, put him in the spot where you can burn the body afterwards and shoot him there in a box.. then you can burn him right away.

I feel bad for you because it's very heart breaking to have to distroy something that you get sooo attach to because of uncurable diseases. Something that is totally out of your control, exspecially since there is nothing you really can do for them... it makes it hard to get attach to the next one because you always wonder OMG will this be the day this chicken gets it.. It totally sucks.

the last thing is to just let him die on his own of course that's a long an painful process and risking others to get it faster.. Or have a vet put him down for you...

I agree, I wouldn't get rid of the whole flock because of this one, I would take one chicken at a time.

Ive got 4 other chicks in the house with me. They have been housed with Juicy since the day I got them. I dont know if they will show signs or not, but if they are infected I have seen no symptoms. I read that sometimes it can take 6 weeks to 3 months for symptoms to appear, so I just dont know.

I'll continue to have my son take care of the birds outside. If none of the chicks in the house show any signs of illness by the end of next week, then I will start taking measures to sanitize myself before going out to the coop. My son does not come in contact with the chicks in the house. he is very careful not to interact with them or thier feed or bedding.

I guess only time will tell. Maybe by some fluke the others will be fine. Maybe this peep is just sickly and was vulnerable.

I guess when owning chickens you sort of like playing the lottery every day. You can be lucky, but not all the time. Sometimes the numbers just arent in your favor.

I guess my number was up.

I really tried. Some might say I didnt, but when I sit up most of the night nursing a chick, spend hours each day watching and observing, watching for every little sign, I have to say that I did try.

I love my flock too much to leave it to chance. If this bird really truely does have Mareks, it is better that one die so the rest can live than it is to put all my birds at risk and watch them all die.

Maybe you could send in the feather and have it tested. I would search on ways to test alive bird, then you know whats wrong.
