My mom just called me, her power is out. She just got 10 chicks today (before the power went out, obviously, heh). What can she do to keep them warm?

I did a search, but can only find information on power outages and incubating. Sometimes my google-fu is pretty weak. Please help!

she can use milk jugs with hot water drap a towel over them the chick will huddle under give them a few hrs maybe. Oh horrible Fingers crossed it comes back on for her where is she located if you dont mind me asking

Wrap a hot water bottle in a towel, if you can heat water. Bring them inside, if they are not already. If you have a fireplace, you can put them in a box at an appropriate distance from the fire. You need to watch this carefully, and with a thermometer if you can, so you don't overheat them. Take them to a friend who has power.

I am sure others will have more suggestions.

since there is just 10 chicks, I would divvy them up with family members and hold them. But that would depend on the length of the outage....

Thanks for the water idea... We have 60 mph wind and 3 three day old chicks, plus the toddlers~ 10 days and teens 4 weeks.
ChristinaMae, Can she get rocks warmed? Again, wrapping the rock would be necessary. It stays warm a long time.
Good luck

and watch for falling trees.

Ok, sounds like I covered all the bases with what I told her. I even told her it sounds like someone is gonna be sleeping with baby chicks tonight, haha. She's got my brothers scrounging for firewood, and the dog locked up in another room. I don't think her house heats up alot, though. Maybe 70-80? It's a small house, but old. Her brooder is fairly small (she was only planning on getting 4 chicks, and was going to get something bigger to brood them in tomorrow.) so that might be a benefit right now. I told her to wrap a blanket around the brooder and across the top at least until the fire warms the house up, and she's looking for her hot water bottle, but if she can't find it she'll put hot water into mason jars or milk jugs, whatever she can find. I will tell her to watch the temps closely, too.

She's in Stanwood. They haven't had any really stormy weather today, other than the occasional gust of wind and rain of course. She didn't think they were in danger of losing power this time, or she wouldn't have gotten the chicks yet. When they lose power they're usually the first to get it turned back on or the last - we're hoping for the former this time! Worst case, I told her to take them to my aunts house in Marysville.

Thank you all for your help.

ETA: Oh, rocks are a great idea, too. I'll pass that along as well, thanks!

Wow, so I'm not the only WA-er who experienced an outage. If it were just ten chicks, I'd personally just hold them and divy the rest among the family members who care.

We actually just had a power outage for 2 hours today, and simply brought in all the chicks to the warmest room in the house, and kept them in a tall cardboard box. There were over 30 chicks there, and they're all 2 weeks old, so they were plenty happy and snuggly warm with each other. They fell alseep through all of it.

My worry was the incubators. . . Which, after the outage, luckily only dropped to 80 degrees. I think they're fine, I've had outages with my hatches before.
