I am incubating some eggs sent via post.

I have incubated eggs in the past and it’s been clear as to what I am looking for when candling the eggs.

however this time round I’m baffled as to what I’m looking at. Of 6 of my eggs one had a very clear blood ring and one had no fertilisation so I discarded it. But some of my other eggs I have no idea. I can’t see any veins etc. They are Pekin bantam eggs. I’ve attached some pics. Are they gonners ? Thank you for your help

For day 7 I would expect to see something developing. Those look like clears to me but if they don't stink it wouldn't hurt to put a question mark on those eggs and check them again in a few days to see if there's any development. The shadow you're talking about looks like saddled or detached air cells to me. Does the shadow move?

No the dark patch doesn’t move - almost like it’s stuck to the inside of the shell. Oh I’m sad they’re probably infertile. I had a clear blood ring on another egg so at least one was fertile at least! Bad batch it seems

You're referring to this area correct? That shape is called a saddled air cell, it doesn't mean the embryo can't develop and hatch, it just means that the typically round air cell was shaken around enough to detach and reattach in a slightly different shape. This is very common with shipped eggs.

Ohhhh really? That’s interesting! So I can’t see any veins or anything... would that mean not fertilised or does the saddled air cell obstruct the view of it ... should I leave it a little longer? sorry for the 21 questions. Thank you for letting me know about the saddled air cell!

Ask all the questions you need to! That's how we learn! I asked somebody all of these questions once upon a time too!

The air cell doesn't obstruct the view of the developing embryo but if you're new to candling or if you don't have an extremely bright candler I would wait a few more days just to be sure, but I don't see any development from your picture either. In my goose eggs I couldn't see ANYTHING until day 5-6 and I've been doing this for a while, lol.

This is a chicken egg, with a white shell, with a very bright candler and the goose egg below to give you an idea. Sorry I haven't actually hatched any ducklings to show you.

Hmmm I definitely don’t see anything like that. Ahhh I’m gutted to be honest, I’ll leave for a few more days, candle again and then make a desicion . Thank you ever so much for your time with helping me. I think I’ll go to my local farm for some eggs next time! Thanks again
