I am treating my girls for respitory infection (bubble eye) with tetracycline and have been told not to eat the eggs.
That does not make sense to me since it is an antibiotic. I do not see how that could affect the egg.
I would not think that would poison or make the egg bad. Does anyone know anything about this?
If I cant eat them can my dogs?

I had the same situation. i contacted Dr. Peter Brown (AKA the Chicken Doctor) and he said do not eat the eggs until 3-4 weeks AFTER you take hen off tetracycline.
I took his advice.

i've read that you can take the eggs you are going to be disposing of and cook them up to feed back to the hens for protein. good use while not wasting the eggs or the antibiotic that is in them.

and i guess the eggs would taste bad if you tried to eat them. (and the antibiotic is not good for human consumption when you are not sick already!)

The idea is that the anit-biotics pass to the egg - and into your system - giving you unnecessary medication - which could affect how anti-biotics work in your system later on. Or even cause a possible allergic reaction. It's a safety precaution. I dosed my ill chickens this summer for a week, then for three weeks I tossed the eggs.

While I hate wasting the eggs, I will not eat them and feed them to the chickens. I know the dogs would love them but it sounds like the same goes for them. Bummer.........
I just started getting eggs and now I can't eat them. Looks like I will have scrambled eggs in Feb.

I had one chicken out of 24 -a silkie mix- with a bubbly eye for a month or so. Had tried feeding eye droppers of Sulfamet water and washing with boric acid (contact lense cleaner) with little improvement; she still had bubbles about every third time I saw her. I put vicks vaporub on her face, mainly bec. it was kind of dry and crusty looking, and surprise - the eye bubbled, then never did it again. That's been 2 months ago.
