We have a very odd looking egg. this is a pic of all the eggs we got today. In the second pic you can see that this one is squishy. there is no hard shell on it at all. Now I am not sure what happened to it, usually I would assume that the girls need some oyster shells. But none of the others seem to have a need for this. We have 3 chickens that are 3 years and another 3 that are 16 months. So I am wondering if the 3 year olds are coming to the end of their laying time and this is the cause of this?

We got a few of these too but mine were from younger hens. She layed them a few times off and on over a 2 month time frame and hasn't done it since, about a year now. I was told it was just a defective egg, not to eat it because the protective outter shell wasn't on it and could hold bacteria. Good luck. Hope her eggs harden.

The soft-shelled eggs are somewhat common in new and old layers. It could be just that their body didn't produce an egg right (which happens sometimes) or they may need oyster shell. I suggest putting some oyster shell out there in case they need it, and they will eat what they need. If you continue to get more of those eggs, it's probably a calcium deficiency in the hen.
