This chick just hatched and I’m not sure whether this is intestines, a hernia, or just the cord… a small bit of yolk sac is still attached but it’s a weird greenish grey color? Only one other chick had any remnant of yolk when it hatched but it didn’t look like this at all. Is there anything special I should do for this baby? Right now it’s all by itself in the bator, and the other three eggs with it I think are late quitters-going to float test tomorrow morning. Just saying it won’t have anyone picking on it in there.

I did assist slightly, as it’s overdue and seemed to be in trouble- internally pipped but thrashing about like it was panicked (or maybe that was just my own anxiety talking). I could hear it chirping, so I made a safety hole. After several hours still no visible progress but tons of loud chirping, so I widened the hole to have a look. Membrane was already drained of blood, and had been pipped (or just torn?) in several places around the base of the air cell as though it had been trying to zip but couldn’t break all the way through. I could see from where the membrane was torn that the chick was actually feet over head, which I guess would explain why it was having so much trouble. Anyway, that’s all I did and left it to do it’s thing. So I’m really hoping this isn’t due to anything I did.

I do not think you caused this.

Since you did not find any bleeding when you assisted, you probably did it at the right time.

When chicks hatch, there is often a lump of something that is not part of the chick, that either stays in the shell or spills out or occasionally stays attached to the chick. I think that is what your chick has.

If the hanging thing has not fallen off yet, I would take a pair of scissors and carefully snip through one of the skinny points, to remove most of it. That will keep it from dragging and catching on things. In the photos, it looks like something that can be snipped safely. (Of course you should use your own judgement there, because you can see it much better in person than I can in the photos.)

Thank you! I was truly worried 😅. It has fallen off now, and so I’m just waiting for little one to fluff up and then I’ll move it to the brooder with the others!
