Hi guys, I am new to BYC and was wondering if you guys could help me out.
I am currently living in a static caravan on our small holding whilst we build our house, and I was wondering if I should get some guinea fowl and/or some quail.
I am mostly worried about if I can make money out of them, If they can breed and lay naturally and the whole totally free range life type thing

Don't expect to make a profit your first hatch. Unless you have a big guinea farm you probably won't make much. It will also take a while for you to get a pattern going. (I am talking about guinea fowl I don't know too much about quail) and Don't GET GUINEAS IF YOU LIVE CLOSE TO ANYONE!!! Are you going to sell them as pets or as food??

Guinea fowl are very LOUD. Do you have a market for them? It takes money to make money and a lot of times - the profit never materializes.

oh I can't stress how loud they are!! I had to expand my chicken run over the weekend and all they did was squak squak squak!! It's not even like a cute chicken cluck!! Its a pretty ugly sounding squak!!

I was mostley going to eat the eggs and meat for the guineas so I was wondering if they are worth the hassle and noise

I have both guinea and quail... If you're going for meat for yourself, go with guinea. Bigger, better weight gain, they're good watchdogs, and they are basically hands off, take care of themselves.

Bobwhite are much more "needy", space, heat, can't free range a quail...well, actually you can..once lol ;)

Profit, long term most likely qyail will make more profit than guinea, depending on where you are located... Bobwhite here are trained and used for hunting, and eggs are a delicacy. Nobody around hete will eat a guinea, except us lol...

But it takes a lot of work to get to profit stage on birds. Work on brooding, selecting best breeders, outbuildings and coops, study health issues and the market before starting a venture for profit. Take it easy and enjoy them for a while before it becomes " work" ;)

Welcome. I don't think you can free range quail. At least no one I know does it. But I have had guinea fowl and they can free range, but should be locked up at night depending on what predators you have. Not sure if you can make money from them. Mostly we ate the eggs.
I think (just my opinion) it might be easier to free range chickens and there might be more of a market for them and chicken eggs.
Plus there are so many interesting breeds. Good luck whatever you decide.
