My neighbour has ducks, a drake & his mate. I know nothing about ducks so here's my questions:
Does anyone know what breed they are & general breed characteristics? At present they are penned but their property isn't fenced so are they likely to roam if let out & are they destructive to gardens & lawns? Thanks for any input.

Muscovy ducks!
Here is a link to their Wikipedia page. Hope that helps!

They are Muscovy ducks. They’re the quietest of the ducks and are usually raised for meat. I doubt your neighbor intends to let them out if s/he has no perimeter fence. Also the choice of the quiet Muscovy breed suggests s/he doesn’t want to trouble neighbors with unwanted noise.

Ducks in general (not sure about Muscovy ducks as they’re different from the usual domestic breeds) are mainly only a danger to young succulent plants and low fruits. They’re very fond of garden pests, so later in the season they can be a lot of help in the garden. They won’t damage lawns unless there are too many ducks for the available space.

Go and talk with your neighbor. I’m always about assuming the best... most people you meet really do want to get along. You can get the best answers to your questions and concerns that way... and who knows? You may meet a wonderful new friend. :hugs

Um, lol I'm asking for my neighbour actually. ;) The ducks were a gift & she's pretty clueless. I have chooks so wasn't much help but then I thought of you guys....:celebrate
Thanks for the help.

Chickens will make a disaster of your yard--big holes that you will step in and break your ankle, they will tear up anything and everything even if they aren't going to eat it: flowers, grass, landscaping. I had a hen dig up mulch to the garden cloth underneath and she put holes in the garden cloth getting to the dirt underneath! Ducks don't scratch, they will pick bugs off of your garden plants and keep pests away. They might trample little plants, however.

LOL Silly me. Totally misunderstood you. So... I think the Muscovies would likely wander. They fly and like to roost in trees though the males get too heavy to fly much as they mature. They have claws, not flippers and while they like water, they don’t NEED it the way other ducks do. They are usually broody and make good mothers. If you’re thinking about stealing eggs, be sure to have long sleeves and gloves. They’re prolific, I hear, and reportedly very tasty.
