My girl Buttercup had quit laying a good while back & hasn’t laid for a few months now. She has been fine until yesterday when I noticed she looked lethargic, wasn’t her sassy self, not eating like usual and most of all her abdomen going back between her legs is really bloated. She’s not walking like normal and today has just taken it easy laying in the dust bed. What can this be and what can i do to help her? I took her out yesterday & today & massaged her belly. I do not feel anything hard. She stood once while i held her and pooped just clear liquid.

She may be suffering from a reproductive disorder such as salpingitis which can also cause water belly. You could try giving her a human calcium tablet with vitamin D in case she needs to lay an egg or lash material. I usually do not attempt to drain my hens with suspected water belly unless they are having labored breathing. If you see any solid droppings, let us know if they have any yellow urates, and take a picture. I would offer her some wet chicken feed and scrambled egg to make sure that she is getting enough.

She hasn’t laid for a long time now, several months. When she was laying she laid huge eggs, some double yolk, very thin shells & one soft shelled. She had vent prolapse several times which always stayed after i pushed back in and held. But she has always constantly been working her vent. I didn’t know if that was normal? Could she still have salphingitis(sp) even though she quit laying so long ago? How do i give her a calcium pill? She’s drinking more than eating that i have seen but she’s still in coop so i don’t see when she eats but her crop felt full last night. I did drain some fluid but wasn’t as much as i expected and she’s still really bloated and not feeling well.
