I live in Australia and am looking for a really good egg laying breed.

My family and I are moving out to our farm in a few months after we sell our current house and when we get there, we are allowed to have a "few" chooks (says dad)

He is a BIG egg eater and therefore we need a breed that lays big and very tasty eggs!! And a breed that does double yokers! lol dad gets all high and happy with delight when he get a double yoker! lol.

So if anyone knows of a breed that lays really nice eggs, please let me know!

What about an Australorp. They originated in Australia. They lay nice sized brown eggs and are often laying machines. Generally friendly and easy to handle

Why thank you for the info!
I will look into all those breeds!

Aussiesharon, the australorp sound like EXACTLY what I want!!

Ive just got to find one close to where I live!

If you want lots of eggs - leghorns and Road Island Reds but I find leghorns are flighty and frustrating to work with while RIR roos are aggressive towards people. I would recommend Austalorps definitly as they are nice birds and will give you the eggs you are looking for. Australian to boot!!

Kizza sorry I can't help you find more info on the Australorps in Australia and where to get some. I'm an Aussie living in America

There is an Aussie section on here though and maybe they can help you. Go to "I am here where are you?" section of the forums and you'll see a post for Australia. Maybe someone on there can help you more.

Good luck!

Sharon

PS. Loved your website!

ooh why thank you!

Sharon, Glad you loved my site! Hows America? Whats it like?

If you want egg laying machines, go with sexlinks and production reds (most rir's). Heavier breeds may be calmer and nicer but if you want eggs, go with a production breed. My one leghorn lays about half as much as the other 9 egg laying brown layers... She keeps the flock fed with the egg money from her eggs. She is a bit flighty though. Has eggs bigger than those in the jumbo carton too.
