I've never had to deal with this before this is our 1st set of chickens we've had since they were chicks and out Sweetest one is acting different all of a sudden. She keeps fluffing her feathers, her tail feathers keep fluffing out and making a different sound than normal. I'm worried she maybe egg bound. I tried the warm bath yesterday but it didn't work. Any ideas. I just want to make sure shes ok. No I have not done the exam to see if I can feel an egg i'm scared lol

Don't try to feel for an egg. Chances are you won't be able to, anyway. Often the egg is shell-less and is stuck in a place you can't access.

At the first sign of egg binding, and it only requires a suspicion, give one calcium tablet like these.

Don't keep soaking the hen as it just adds stress which makes the binding worse. Keep her in a quiet place with clean water to drink and check on her frequently. Often, a soft egg will come out, but if the hen continues to behave like she doesn't feel well, another egg could be still inside.

Once the blockage is cleared, you'll have no doubt the hen is in the clear as she will spring back to normal quite as quickly as a rubber band when you quick stretching it.

Thank you so much, she doesn't seem to be lethargic like I've read that they seem to be when the egg is stuck that's why I was scared to do to much. Is it ok to give this even if she may not be egg bound? do you dilute in it water or how do I give it to her? Also do you suggest I keep her inside and not in the coop? My girls are on spring break this week so they are watching her every 30 mins to see if they can see her in the nesting box. My phone is going crazy with chicken updates  i tried to upload a video but couldn't figure out how to lol

Give one whole tablet directly into her beak. Get it far back on the tongue and she will swallow it. It does no harm to give this pill if she's not egg bound. One tablet may be all that she needs to stimulate contractions and get the egg out.

Ok I was just able to get the pill down🎉 before I gave her the pill I noticed shes opening her mouth like she's burping??? Respiratory issue maybe? Any idea what to give for that or could it have to do with a egg being stuck(if it is)? She is pooping. I brought her inside for about 10 mins and she pooped.

The open beak gaping can be from stress and discomfort. Respiratory illness produces discharge from eyes and nares and there may be a sound of raspy breathing.

You can put a little sugar in her water to combat the stress. It's the same as a glucose drip for a human patient to counter shock and pain.

I'm actually going to get a crate from a friend so I can keep her inside and keep an eye on her better. Do you suggest that or will that stress her more?

It will acutally soothe her to be in a quiet place where she doesn't get hassled by the others. It will make it much easier to monitor her and treat her.
