OK, so yesterday I received for baby chicks from delivery. Today I noticed that one of them had bald spots on either side of her vent. I quickly saw that these were symptoms of chicken mites. I am very scared because she is staying in one place in the brooder, walking around very little. She is also scratching a lot. I went to the pet store with chicken supplies and talk to you when the employees. She said that it may be mites. She gave me some Diatomaceous earth to give her dust bath. I've done that and she seems to be a tad better and more adventurous but I'm still worried that if there are mites that they have not gone gone away. Could someone please help me?

I can't help, I haven't had this experience, but I am helping to bump your thread.

Meanwhile to help others answer your question, have you actually seen any mites? Or is is possible that the chick missing feathers is weak, and thus being picked on?

I'm sure she's not being picked an because all my chicks are very friendly and tame, and there's no blood. They're also only a few days old. There's a patch of smooth, bald skin on her underbelly, but there's white bumps on the bald skin near her vent. Did some searching and I found that if there's plucking there's going to be bleeding. I think it might be lice? I gave her a DE bath and she seems a bit more lively.

Bald spots on her bottom could be from the cleaning of a clogged vent by who ever you bought it from.... Depending on age, it could be fro feather pecking.... Not enough protein... Or it can be from parasites or maggots.. Which is usually caused by dirty conditions... Mites can usually be seen when inspected. Lice can usually be seen too. Keep us posted on symptoms so we can help better.

Ah. Well then I think it is from vent cleaning then. She has had a dirty butt ever since she came. The others are all very clean as well, it's a very good farm and I would be surprised is there were bad conditions. Most likely not enough protein. I'm giving them a lot of egg yolk in their feed already so I think a few more days of that will do it.

I also think that Ame may be just a touch underdeveloped, she's very small and I'm pretty sure she was a late hatcher. Maybe this is why she has that smooth skin on her belly?

Just remember that a sick chick needs a dry clean area. Heat, food water and grit ( just incase she ate bedding) keep her separated from the flock incase of disease... I don't treat my girls with antibiotics but others do... What are her full symptoms... A bare belly can happen if she was wet and dirty for a long time, feather pecking..... Or parasites... Good luck!!!
