On last thursday we noticed a pretty large limb fell into the chicken pen and we think it may have hit one of our silkies. I found her huddled in the corner of the coop tilted sideways and her neck was also tilted sideways. The first two days she was eating a little on her own with me holding it up to her face and also giving her water with a dropper about three times a day. Now she has gotten so so weak and her condition has gotten a lot worse in the past two days. She just lies completely on her side all day and night long and if I try to sit her up, she just falls back over again. Can not stand at all. Also, her neck and head severely bends way over to the same side, almost to the point where she is laying on her side with her head twisted upside down. I feel so bad for her. Today I had to start force feeding her oatmeal with an eye dropper since she wont eat at all on her own. I can barely get anything down in her. I'm afraid she may starve to death. Her feet and toes also curl up severely, especially on the side she always lays and crooks her neck own on. (Left side). Does this sound like wry neck or some other type of disease? I really don't know what to do. Do you think it's too severe for her to recover at this point? Any tips or suggestions would be great please? I feel so horrible for her. I recently started working again so I can't feed or give her water all through out the day, but I do force feed her once a day and give her water with also a little poly-vi-sol three times a day. I can tell it stresses her with the force feedings so I don't want to do it too much. I'm at a loss of what else to do for her.

Hi I'm also nursing a severe case of wry neck in my own bird. Yes there is something you can try for the brain swelling
I'm using it on my bird
Its actually used in conjunction with vitamins selenium vitamin children's liquid vitiman polyvisol without iron. The pill is called predinsone. It is a steroid and will reduce her brain swelling. This treatment is the Alan Stanford's treatment for wry neck. Specifically geared for silkies .you can find his treatment with EXACT doses and treatment plan for each week specifically laid out on his web site browneggblueegg.com. once you go to his website on the left hand side there will be a glossery.look for and click on crook neck. There you will find all the information. When my bird first came down with this she couldn't eat on her own.I'm on my first week of predinsone and my girl is eating and drinking now when I hold her bowl up to her. This I thank God for! She still has a long road to improvements but she's eating great and drinking great when before she couldn't hold her own head up to eat
The predinsone has really helped her brain swelling.you will have to have patients at first they fall asleep quite a bit. even during a meal.I had to wake my bird continuously in the beginning when she started eating. Before that I was giving water and food with a syringe. Holding her head in my hands waking her up in between.now she holds her own head up when I feed her and water her
My bird has only been on this treatment one week. Progress is slow but there is definite improvements. My bird is chirping now eating and drinking well and holding her own head up while doing it! She is taking the predinsone twice daily for a total of two milligrams. I ended up having my doctor call in the predinsone for me . this is how I got mine. Or you can get it from the vet
Just make sure they prescribe enough pills for treatment. It doesn't matter how you get the medicine weather its written for you or your bird just try to get it! It will really help with her brain swelling! You can even get it from 1800petmeds as long as a vet OKs the RX over the phone they will send it. On the treatment site of Alan Stanford's treatment for wry neck is a helpful page you can print out and take to the vet to explain to the vet why the bird needs the predinsone prescription.take a look at his site.I hope this helps you and your bird! Best wishes to you and God bless.

Thanks so much! I just hope it's not too late, or the vet that I try to get the RX thru doesn't hold me up by needing to see the bird or anything. I'm afraid transporting her anywhere or waiting to get an appointment might be too much for her. She is so weak now.

I understand what your going through! My poor little silkie had her head tucked between her legs and she would just keep her little eyes closed
She would even tremble on and off. Don't get discouraged. This takes a lot of patients but you can do it! Hopefully your bird will be eating soon too! I was taking a syringe and dribbling water into my birds beak she was so weak
The progress she's made in a week is good especially the eating and drinking. However my bird has a long road still ahead. She can not walk forwards yet only backwards. She's starting to hold up her head when not eating too! She's still got a lot of improving to do
It can be slow with brain injury. Just don't give up and have a lot of patients. Hopefully soon you will see improvements. Sometimes they have bad days sometimes good days. On bad days I tell myself tomorrow is a new day.and hope for improvements. All we can do is try our best to get them through it
I feed and water every two hours because she can not get to her bowl without my help. Like I said it takes a lot of patients. I truly hope for the best for your bird and will pray for her healing.hang in there! I know its disturbing seeing them in this condition but hopefully soon she will improve with the medication! I hope this was helpful and wish you the best! God bless.

I wish I did! Unfortunately its a perscription only. I have really bad asmatha so my doctor wrote the perscription for my asmatha
That's how I got mine. do you know anyone that might have some for asmatha or authritis? Or maybe you can explain the situation to a vet and have them
write it for you.I know 1800 pet meds carries it and all you need is an OK by phone from the vet. Hopefully this helps. In the mean time fish oil is a natural steroid and that might help. I wish I could be of more help! I wish you the best and God bless
