HELP!!! Pressed for time and feeling like a novice!!!!

lol, no we eat eggs, just not our own. But that's just because we only recently got chickens. We used to raise them when I was young, then we moved and had to stop. And for the past year we raised ducks, I guess we just never chose to eat their eggs...

I'm sure I'm missing something. Is there a reason why your family eats eggs but won't eat eggs that your own chickens lay?

Why on earth would you not eat your own fresh eggs?

You won't be over run with chicks, mixed breed or purebred, if you don't let your hens sit on any eggs. All you have to do is collect the eggs every day.

If you want to start hatching or selling fertile purebred eggs later, just wait a few weeks after you take out the rooster of a different breed.

Most people love their fresh eggs. There are some people that feel squeamish about eating eggs, when they are more aware of where they come from. Some people feel squeamish about eating fertile eggs. As a child, I took a school tour to a commercial egg facility. It has haunted me ever since. I can't pick up a grocery store egg without thinking about where they come from. So, I guess I'm one of the people that's squeamish about grocery store eggs.

You should really try your hen's eggs. At the very least you can use them in baking.

i won't eat the store bought eggs, now that i know how those poor hens are kept. And especially after eating my own girl's eggs, wouldn't want to eat those watery store ones anyhow.

Some people can be squeamish about where the eggs come from. i always love to pick up a fresh laid egg, right after the bloom has set, and rub it on my check. It feels so warm and smooth. Well, my realtor friend was over at the house one day and i just walked in from outside with an egg. i put it up against his cheek and said "Doesn't that feel good?". He went "Bleeeech!" and recoiled, like i just wiped poo on his cheek.

It was very strange.

They will still mate with the hens, so I'm not sure what you're trying to do. ?

Are you going to keep all the hens out the run while the roosters have a time out in the run?

You could partition your coop and run with wire and add a second pop door for them.

Are all of your birds bantams or just the roosters? I was under the impression, and please correct me if I am mistaken, that bantam roos can't fertilize standard hens.

Best of luck! I'm sure you'll find a good solution - there are some really smart folks here.

Bantams roosters can in fact fertilize standards, I don't think its 100% or anything, but they will sure try their best!

thanx to everyone who posted, i never really thought about the fact that I just have to take the eggs out from the hens whether their fertile or not.

and as for the egg eating thing, we WILL be eating our hen's eggs once they reach laying maturity. Right now they are only about 4 1/2 weeks old, so no eggs for a while.

We're going to keep all the chickens together, and will not be separating anybody unless there is aggression issues.

thanx again!
