What is a good price for laying hens? I have thirteen hens and four roosters, all under two years old; two hens are not laying. I tell interested parties the price is $200 for all thirteen hens plus any feed, and if they take the roosters they can have everyone for $175.

If they're only interested in certain hens, it's $20 per hen, which is what I paid for the four hens I got as pullets. But everyone has said that's too expensive.

I will have to take a loss no matter what, but I am definitely charging a fee to make sure they actually get a good home. What is reasonable?

A lot depends on where you live.

What's the pricing like on local selling platforms like Craigslist?

It's also a time I would consider "end of season", meaning we are going into winter. Production is usually less in winter months, so buyers might factor that into the price as well. Feeding hens without getting eggs in return.

Not sure what your circumstances are, but you will likely get a bit more money in spring since folks seem to be more keen on getting chickens then, but that would mean you having to spend $$ throughout the winter on feed, etc.

If you need to rehome them now, then align your pricing to the current rates in your area. And yes, you will probably take a loss in funds no matter how much you charge.

Here in my area, right now, it looks like the average listing price for hens is $8-10 each. Roosters are mainly free.

Hope that helps.

Thanks! I'm not in the greatest hurry to rehome them but we are looking to move in the spring. Looking at Craigslist the price varies all over, from $15 total for three 2-year-olds to $25 per hen. Even roosters cost at least $10.

I typically sell my hens who are in their "prime" for $20 each and the roosters free. Certain breeds of roosters I'd charge $10, but they'd probably have to be pure. Even $5 for a young mixed rooster isn't too bad, as long as there's the option for him to go by himself. On certain breeds of hens, say a specialty breed or color, $35 a bird is fine.

Thanks!

All my hens (except the two that aren't laying) are good layers and are only a year old at the most. So I don't think I'm going to drop the price much.
