HELP! prolapsed vent chick?

Yeah, give it a try, won't hurt anything. I used it until I could get to the store and pick up some witch hazel. It works so much better and keeps it disinfected too! Good luck and before long it'll be gone and you won't have to stress about it.

Okay I picked up some witch hazel. So I just get a cotton wet and dab it on? It won't burn??!

jbher, My baby chicks bottom looked like yours does in the pic. That was about 2 months ago. Nothing seemed to make a bit of difference except Witch Hazel that worked wonders and I also applied sugar to reduce the swelling. I thought for sure our's was going to die. People responded back to me like it was no big deal and I was freaked out! Now I see why,... =) ! It is no big deal and will take care of itself given the proper treatment. I'm not sure if it will burn or not but I know if I hadn't of used it my baby chick prop. would still be dealing with this issue if she made it this far. Good Luck to you! 8)

I have never used a forum before so not sure I am doing it right, but at any rate I AM FREAKING OUT. I just wiped some poop off one of my 5 day old chicks and discovered what I'm sure is a prolasped vent. The main reason I'm freaking out is because I feel so awful for my baby chick having to endure it. I don't have Witch Hazel on hand but could drive 20 minutes to the store and get some since the concensus seems to be for that. I do have Aloe Vera gel and vaseline and local country honey on hand. Should I just get to the store for the witch hazel or try what I have on hand? P.S. these are my first chicks ever, I'm new to all this. Thanks!!!

Aloe Vera and honey will work well. Do not use Vaseline, I'm not sure why but I was told no petroleum on baby chicks. Maybe research that. Honey has disinfecting properties, so id use that and the aloe Vera for now and get witch hazel when you can. Don't freak out, it'll be alright. We all went through it and it sucks but it'll get better. Baby just needs time and patience. Good luck!

Yes, jodawoda, don't panic! As NewlyHatched stated "we all went through this and it will be alright!". Use what you have on hand and if you feel it's not working well enough then try witch hazel. Also some people say to separate chick so others won't pick at vent area and cause other issues. Only you know the situation New Chicken Momma 8) ! Don't freak out... it will be okay! Congraduldations and good luck! 8)

I also think that I have the same problem.
I have had chickens for less than a month and I've just had the worst luck. I had 4 awesome chicks that were 3 weeks old, and then my roommate let my dogs out unsupervised while they were free ranging when I wasn't home. All of them were killed by the dogs, we still haven't found little Roo yet. :-(
Anyways, sadly, I'm starting over. I don't have the sense enough to quit yet. I created an account just for this prolapsed vent deal because I got 3 new chicks and one of them seems to suffer from that? She is smaller than the other chicks and her anatomy seems different than the others. I already soaked her bum twice. I think the second time I chilled her too much because she was walking around like she was drunk for quick some time. She's pooping and eating, but she's very tiny, super noisy, and looks absolutely haggard compared to the other fluffy chicks. Do I pushed the protrusion back in? Do I have to get Witch Hazel? I have liquid vitamin E? She completely freaks out when I go near her-- I think I've traumatized her.
Help me, please. Thanks for your time.

Glad to find this thread, as I am dealing with what I believe is the same thing with a Wyandotte chick. Out of the 8 I have, she is the smallest and the only one who hasn't gotten tail feathers yet (they hatched May 28th). Good to know witch hazel should work--hope I can catch her!! She is slower than the other chicks, but still fairly lively and eating and drinking, but not laying down. Her bottom has a pink bulge right below where her tail feathers should be. I kind of doubt I will be able to catch her and push it back in, but will definitely separate her. Luckily the others are not picking at her yet.

It's interesting to me that her feathers have come in slower, and she is growing slower (i.e. she is the smallest chick) and she is the one experiencing this...

Vetericyn has been helped majorly for me, even though this is an old post, I figured I'd mention it. Epsom salt baths, sprayed vetericyn plus, and brown sugar water for a few days to help. My issue was in a turkey poult but it's the same idea. Mine never lost the will to eat, chirp, drink and poop. She is now starting to have regular looking feces and vent, just takes time.
