Hi it’s me again. I noticed one of the hen was limping around. Upon closer inspection, seems like she got an infection or something. I got this whole flock from a guy locally so I don’t know what happen. Putting some pictures here, hoping someone can help. What do I do? I guess the guy I got it from put a bandage on it but i don’t want to remove it without knowing.

Had to cut the bandage off. Here are the pictures with the bandage off and the bottom of the foot.

I would soak it, so you can get a better idea what your working with, but my suspicion is that there was a wound that the breeder taped so the others would not peck the red wound. Either he forgot, or assumed the tape would fall off on its own, but it it looks like the leg swelled or the quail grew since it was applied, and it began to cut off circulation to the foot, resulting in the toes and foot starting to die.

the second pic looks like the ankle could have been broken and he wrapped it for that reason. Im sure other people will have suggestions to soak it in or things to apply to the area of the wound, but if it doesn’t improve you could probably have the leg removed and it would get around fine with 1 leg.

That looks really bad. Quail can be quite resilient, so this one might surprise you, but it might also not make it.

Start by giving that foot a good soak in warm water (perhaps with some epsom salts) and apply some antibiotic ointment. Is a vet an option? This one might require full on antibiotics rather than just a soak and some ointment.

Ok I’ll soak with Epsom salt and we’ll see from there. The only antibiotic I have now is amoxicillin. There’s a vet near me but I don’t think they’re specialised in birds, just cats and dogs.

It won't hurt to ask them rather than depend on someone who only knows basic first aid for the birdies. :)

In my experience, if there's going to be improvement you'll see it fairly quickly, but this kind of infection is beyond my skill.

Many thanks, I will keep you posted of the progress.
