Help!! quarantine and pecking

hi guys,

yesterday, i added four 9-11 month hens and the day before 5 fully feathered cochin pullets

i was keeping the newer, bigger gals in a totally separate area and the babies were sharing a run with the orig flock, but they have their own doggy kennel, water, feed and space.

today i found that one of my new big girls is a lover of the "other side" of the fence and she and another of the new girls love to peck the hell out of the two new americaunas.


so-- can i keep the bleeding, picked on birds in the same run space as my original flock as long as there is a fence dividing them? or is that too close? (i'm worried they need to be far apart)

as for the babies, how old do they have to be before they can hold their own with the big birds?

i'm running out of places to put birds. i only have one 10x4 run and a limited amt of chicken wire.

sigh.

any suggestions?

o.k.,, how many birds in that 10x4 run? in a run that small,, i would never put the babies in with the grown ups,, and,, the grown ups are just gonna get worse on the picking. your run is WAY to small for that many birds, and there WILL be picking, fighting, bleeding, and deaths.
and dont take my post wrong,, im not givin ya ca-ca over it,, but thats enough space for about half of what you have listed,, not counting your "older" girls.

The two new, hopping/pecking girls just got out of their run area and are mingling with my existing flock!!!


what do i do? i don't think they are sick. the guy i bought them from takes excellent care of his birds but darn, sure does defeat the purpose of quarantining them for a month.

i'd try to catch them but it's so hard to chase them around in the mud.

help. please?

currently, it's just the two picked on birds in the run and it's sectioned off with chicken wire. i know it's a small space but it's temporary until they have some time to let me know if they are sick and to let their feathers grow in

the babies are in a doggy crate all sealed up. i want to know at what age can they be a part of the existing flock.

and,, the grown ups are just gonna get worse on the picking. your run is WAY to small for that many birds, and there WILL be picking, fighting, bleeding, and deaths.

i totally know my run is too small for that many birds but they dont live in the run except at night or when i need to keep them out of the yard which isn't often but sometimes it's necessary. i have plans to build a bigger run...but it's snowy today.​

quarantine doesnt mean they can see each other through a fence,, quarantine is when they are completely away from,, by MANY yards, the regular flock,, if you can throw a rock to them from your regular girls pen, then they can catch about every disease the others may have. sorry,, but its kinda late now.

the babies should be at least 3 to 4 months old, UNLESS the adults dont mind babies,, some of my flocks i can stick week old in with, with no problems, but other flocks i have you cant till their old enough to lay

it really depends on your current flock. but at least 3 months,, and theres gotta be places that they can get to that the big birds cant, even perch's help them.

and if its the "new" girls doing the picking,, they are lacking protien in their diet.

not too late. my girls are out and about. i can move the picked on girls to a new location. i might just do that now.

for feed i feed mine "game conditioner" "game maintenance" and 3 grain scratch" as a filler,, and i buy a bucket of "super spur" supplement, it has ALL the good stuff in it for real protein,and calcium and LOTS of other stuff.
but layer pellets would be a good start,, but i dont know what your feeding now?
