Help Quick! Are wild birds nesting int he SE already???

I have to get my brooder ready in the coop today. I'm expecting chicks the first of next week and will be out of town the next few days. So I only have today to get things ready...always procrastinating! Anyway, I am cleaning out a coop that has been empty since last spring. We decided to put them in the fully enclosed coop this year to protect them from our birdeating barn cat. I had some plastic sheeting stapled up over one wall, don't remember why. I had left the windows open so that air would circulate while it was empty. When I pulled the sheeting down there was this crazy looking bird's nest behind it, propped up on the framework. Its huge and the bird lives in a tunnel like thing inside...wish I had pics to post. Anyway, I am needing to bleach out the house and don't want wild birds nesting in there. In the past I've been successful at relocating nests, but it takes alot of effort. I don't want to go through the trouble of moving a "dead" nest. There are four little eggs inside. Could this be this years eggs'? It seems early to me. I'm in SC.

I don't know where you are, but in Oklahoma I've seen birds gathering nesting materials already.

A tunnel? Almost sounds like a Weaver's nest, or a Swallow. But hard to tell without a picture.

Sounds like maybe you have a wren nesting. Their nests look like mice nests to me. I've heard of moving nests and/or rehanging fallen nests in a bucket(hanging of course). I wouldn't want to move one but I'd certainly try to rehang a fallen one in hopes the adult birds would continue to care for the eggs/babies. I'm in central NC and the birds around here have been checking out nest sites. Godd luck with whatever you try. Lynn

We have lots of nests with Spring eggs in them around here, if they aren't hurting anything let them hatch and then remove the nest when they are gone.

Geez....I don't want to kill any baby birds, but I sure don't want wild birds in there with my chicks. Crud! I'll be shutting that window when I put the heat lights in anyway, so I have to move it.

Maybe I'll just kick the cat out the barn and put the chicks in there like I ususally do. I don't know that the cat couldn't find a way in though....geez!

I too would not want to get in the way of nature but,

you are bringing in your own chickies you need the space!!!

try to hang somewere outside the window!

There is definetly a mommy bird. I went out tonight and she flew out the nest. We are going to see if we can't make a space in the barn cat proof. If not I'll do my best to move the nest, but those chicks come first.
