HELP!! Raccoon in my trap, should I release it or kill it???

Mark & Nique :

Have you ever tried to release a LIVE raccoon from a trap?!

No, but it doesn't sound like a very good idea!! lol

I just have a stern talk with the racoon, put it in time out for 10 minutes then let it go. Open the door, pull the racoon out, pat it on its head to let it know we all make mistakes, but that it needs to try and do better next time. Then I let it go. lol

another thing that you failed to mention,be sure to call 911 before you reach in trap to pull the coon out

A bullet will be quick and easy......IF you kill it instantly on the first shot. That happens a lot less than you think. Drowning might be better than being shot several times while thrashing about.... JMHO.

there is a post here somewhere about backing your vehicle up to the trap putting a tarp over it completely runing a hose from your tailpipe under the tarp and putting the little guy to sleep peacefully. It is the method I will use if I face the coon problem. It just goes to sleep and never wakes up.

would you let it go if the night before you caught it 5 of your chickens were shredded to pieces? I think not, so why let the inevitable happen before you do something about the raccoon.

If you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself call your local animal control or law enforcement. Just about every state has a law that every trapped raccoon must be destroyed due to their high risk of rabies carriers. They will come out and take care of it for you. Just remember to get your trap back. You'll need it again.

We began having problems with coons killing and maiming the meaties in our pasture pen several weeks ago. We started setting our live trap every night, and so far we've caught SIX coons and a possum. No chickens have been hurt or killed in a couple of weeks, but we'll continue to set the trap. We feel like we've put some damage on the population around us, but we know there are always more.

I made a deal with DH that I'll set the trap, and he gets rid of whatever it catches. He shoots them through the trap then buries them.

Well DH came home for lunch and didn't want to shoot the coon b/c he said it would be too messy. I told him about the different suggestions here (now I wish I hadn't!) and he decided to go with the drowning method.

It went fast, but I still feel really bad about it.

Thanks for all of the ideas everyone!

I have been drowned twice asphyxiated once and electrocuted 3 times the only one that hurts is electrocution when you are wet and get electrocuted it hurts for 1-3 weeks. I was asphyxiated with nitrogen this gas does not hurt you just go to sleep, I do not know about CO2.
