Help! Red Star hen's wing bleeding. WARNING: Graphic Pic

Help! My brother's Red Star hen, Linda, looks like she has broken a blood feather or something on one of her wings!

I have no idea how it happened, but it wasn't like that this morning when I let all the chickens out in their run. My sister just noticed it a little while ago.

I heard that flour is suppose to help stop the bleeding. Right now it's not bleeding a lot but I'm just worried about it. What can I do to help her? She seems to be acting fine. She's not holding her wing down or anything.

Flour does help to stop bleeding. I usually put triple antibiotic ointment (no pain-reliever!) on wounds and, depending on how big the wound is, I may bandage it with cotton and sport-wrap. If she's holding her wing normally, then your main problem may just be keeping the others from pecking at it. You may want to separate her for a while just to keep her away from the others (chickens LOVE red!!!) The first thing is to stop the bleeding, though. How big is the area? Is is just one feather or are there more feathers missing? If the area isn't too big, then she may be able to keep herself from being pecked.

You can always give her a nice bath to clean her up and get rid of the excess blood.. This will allow you to see exactly where she is bleeding from and then put antibiotic ointment (without pain reliever) on it and wrap it if you choose.. Then blowdry on a low setting.. Will give you a better look at what exactly is going on and she will get a little pampering in the process..

If you use flour, please be sure to separate her because one or more of the others may like the taste. Probably a good idea to separate her any way. I keep some wound powder in the porch of my coop, you can get it at pharmacies or at tack shops, TSC or ag supply places...it's styptic powder or alum, and will stop bleeding very fast. It can be left on if you have to bandage. Several ways to deal with this...
