I went outside to put my chickens away and found my rooster (who turned 1 year old this June) tilting his head. We looked and found no injuries. It's only him and his hen and they get lonely without each other. He is having a little trouble breathing if we aren't holding his head up, will a neck brace of some sort work? He doesn't seem to be in any pain. will a neck brace of some sort work? Please help.

Wry neck or torticolis is only a neurological symptom. It can be a result of head injury, vitamin deficiency, but also of certain diseases such as Mareks, respiratory diseases, and lymphoid leukosis. I would start with giving poultry vitamins that include thiamine (vitamin B1,) vitamin E, and the mineral selenium. You can give a small amount of egg, tuna, or sunflower seeds for selenium if your vitamins don't contain them. If he cannot eat and drink enough, mix a little chicken feed with a large amount of water, and hold him wrapped in a towel to get him to eat several times a day. You could also just offer it is he will take it. Do not try to brace his neck--this is an involuntary spasm. Leave him with his mate if possible.

thank you. we gave him some selenium last night and he seems much better only a few spasms. I'm just about to give him some vitamin E. He is still eating very well but hasn't had any water yet.

My leghorn chick born last night has this. My son keeps saying "help him feel better mom."
Where do you get this selenium?
Someone also suggested n iron polyvinyl visol?

Please let me know.

Thank you very much

Selenium is found in egg, tuna, sunflower seeds and other foods. You may get selenium in the vitamin sedrion of feed stores. You can give Poultry Cell or NutriDrench 2-3 ml a day, and it has selenium, plus the vitamins. For wry neck I would give thiamine (vitamin B1) as well as E and selenium, since wry neck can result from E or B1 deficiency.

Roo is much better, we traced his spasms to a pinched nerve. Once we got him back with his girl he seemed much happier and had fewer spasms. I had to raise his food and water so he could reach it without hurting himself though.

I doubt at a couple days old he can eat any of that. I will get the vitamins. Hope it helps.
