About a month ago, our local animal shelter posted about a hen. weeks went by and no one had adopted her so we picked her up. We are relatively new to chickens, by new, I mean we ended up adopting two roosters that showed up at our house 2 years ago, after no one would take them, fell in love and the rest is history. One of our roosters had recently died and we thought it was fate a hen showed up needing help and could be a companion for our lonely bantam. We named her Jersey.

Well first, the shelter did not post an accurate picture of the chicken (it is the first one posted). We laughed when we saw how big she was. She is 3x the size of Ricky (our white rooster). Jersey does not lay eggs (we thought maybe she is an old soul), no spurs and she crows. We go back and fourth daily thinking hen or rooster.

If anyone can help by looking at the pictures, it would be greatly appreciated. We adore this chicken, we just want to understand it better.

The picture the shelter posted isn't just a bad picture of the rooster, it's a completely different bird.

FYI, to prevent your hens getting all scratched up from over-breeding, a good ratio is 10 hens to 1 rooster.
