Yes..... in hind sight I wouldn’t purchase from tractor supply. And thank you for the advice I will do much research Prior and on APA standard and will reach back out to the group on recommendations for future purchases!! And advice on breeding when the time comes! If you're interesting in breeding them, I recommend looking at the APA Standard of perfection for Jersey Giants and black copper marans. Any roos that have obvious flaws or are aggressive to you or the hens you should cull or rehome. Narrow it down to a couple from each breed, than wait until they develop further. Tractor Supply has hatchery stock birds. If you would like to get into breeding marans, I recommend getting some show quality birds that will have pure blood (I sound like lucius malfoy lol) as they shouldn't have defects that will come out later, and will be closer to the SOP.
Yes, I know what a bachelor pad is.......Do you know what a bachelor pad is? You have three pullets if ten is like 6 and 9. The big crowns mean they are closer to laying.
I have never done any breeding myself, but I know that it involves a lot of hatching, judging, and culling. I know that some breeders learn how to vent sex their chicks, but it's not too common. Any birds with obvious defects you'll generally cull, usually birth deformities like cross beaks or malformed head/legs/wings, or even just wrong skin color or extra toes. Some traits are harder to breed out than others, so if a bird has perfect everything but the wrong eye color, you will want to research what is easy to breed out.Yes..... in hind sight I wouldn’t purchase from tractor supply. That's just what I've picked up from looking at breeding threads on BYC. Please feel free to correct anything I've saidWow, If I did that,I would only have three pure bred birds left in my flock.

Yep! I love roos! I think that they are handsome gentlemen and I love the sound of crowing. I wish I could have one but parents and laws both say no.Wow, If I did that,I would only have three pure bred birds left in my flock.

6 and 9 are the only girls. You can create a bachelor pad for the boys. (I found this picture) but this is how you can tell tell 12 or more weeks if it’s a boy. View attachment 2301032
I really love hearing Roos also!!! I was thrilled when they started crowing in front of me! I wish it wasn’t so difficult to keep them. And I don’t have the space or desire to add enough hens to accommodate all of them lol!!! I want plenty of eggs but not that many!!! A friend gave me a small incubator (If I decide to go that route) for when I’m ready to tackle breeding. But I have a long way to go. I have to build a small coop for them and now I have prioritize and build a bachelor pad, I have a feeling it’s going to take some time to rehome these guys. I suppose the bachelor pad could eventually become the coop for the young...Yep, I love roos! I think that they are handsome gentlemen and I love the sound of crowing.
