HELP, scalped quail

Look at your local pet supply store, or farm supply store. One of them might have something for your quail. Separate your quail from any others, and immediately look online or somewhere you think that will have some pet medicine and get it.

They carry that spray at most feed stores. It is in a blue spray bottle. It works on all kinds of wounds used it on my cat. But works on almost all wounds.

OK, just been home to check, he's still alive. Drank some honey water. Vet has nothing, well a $60 electrolyte mix that has just expired
Will ring next town .

he still hanging in there, very swollen round his eyes. the vet had a just expired bottle of poly aid with probiotics. so hes had a litle of that and looked like he wanted to straigthen out his feathers.
still totally hideous injury and the swelling makes it look worse. he wont sit down but hes standing under the heat lamp, capable of moving when its too warm. I'll keep offering him liquid.
poor thing

Scalp wounds look ghastly, but most healthy birds survive the experience. I have seen birds scalp themselves to the skull and heal ok. The main thing is to keep the wound clean. Simply washing the wound with sterile water will help. Saline water is best, but boiled and cooled bottled water will work in a pinch (but straight water will burn a bit.) Make sure to wrap a towel around his body, do you don't soak him and cause him to get chilled.

I always clip wings of any quail with head wounds. This keeps them from injuring themselves while healing.

Antibiotic ointment works well, but be careful, since it can trap dirt inside the wound.

Keep him on paper towels and change whenever dirty(sometimes 3 or 4 times a day). Once his scalp scabs over, you can clean the cage less often, but at least in the morning and night.

Other than that, the best thing to do is leave him alone as much as possible. Handling sick and injured birds causes them too much stress.

The hardest part will be waiting until he is fully healed before returning him to his flock. If there are any scabs at all,the others will peck him bloody again.

Good plan on wings, the vet wouldnt give me antibiotic cream, but will watch him closely. I just cant believe he hasnt collapsed. Thank you all for making me feel less alone.
