This is just my funny story with buying 4 naked necks at TSC.

The older gentleman assigned to help me didn’t “appear” to be chicken illiterate, as some definitely do. As I, and others, were peering into the troughs of chicks he told us he would help us when we were ready. The few other shoppers walked away and the gentleman came up to me and said, “You know, I can sex them for you, but I can’t give you all girls.” Yes, he said girls, not pullets. Okay, should have been sign #1, but no biggie.

Since I did plan on buying several and they were in a straight run trough, I thought what the heck! Who knows maybe he does know some old way of doing it. It couldn’t hurt cause I was going home with some anyway. Most of the chicks were black/dark and there was a really cute one that was an orangy/buff color.

He picked up three of the dark ones and said they were all girls. He said, “That one (pointed to the orange one) is a boy.”

Good deal, I’ll take them! And I headed home with my four little $1.99 naked neck chicks.

Yeah, skip forward about 4-5 weeks. Maybe the poor old soul did know how to sex the chicks, but he got it completely backwards. I wound up with two cockerels and one pullet (one died as a chick - most likely a cockerel, too).

So here’s the moral of my story: don’t trust the TSC employee, even IF they may look like they know what they’re talking about.

I'm not doing straight run....luckily.

I know even if I do "Female only" I still have a chance of a rooster.

We bought 36 chickens last yr and got the sexed ones. We also did what some would call a “wives” tale but it worked for us. We would lift them by the shoulders or just behind the neck, very carefully, if they squirmed a lot they were supposed to be Roos. If they hang there supposed to be hens. We got one rooster. Worked with all breeds.
