HELP! Show me your chicken-proof garden fencing!

My birds have an 18x18' run that they're in if I'm not out with them. In the late afternoon I let them out, they're never outside without one of us being there, too many predators around here (especially hawks!) to let them free range. I'm going to have to fence in my garden, also, thank you for the Red Brand hint, I'm definitely going to look into it.

Uh oh. This is the answer to the question I had. Oh, who am I kidding? One of the many questions. I have a good sized garden and I don't want to fence the whole thing. I guess once the garden is established, I can let the chickens out? If they ate my strawberries/flowers/blackberries, etc.... I think even my girlfriend would be okay with chicken soup, that night.

Maybe I'll take a corner of the yard and fence that. They'll get light and shade and I'll put their coop in the middle of the fence, so I can get in there. Man, these chickens are involving a lot of manufacturing!

LOL I think it's my favorite part! I love building stuff, especially if I can do it on the cheap.

Sometimes I think I should just buy a whole bundle of 2x4's though.....to save on trips to Home Depot! LOL

Picket fence! Chickens like to fly up on, perch, then down... they don't really fly over. Pickets are too uneven for them to rest on. You may get a few that go for it but, it's a huge detterent. I have flyers and they don't get in my flower garden

this is an ok pic of my pickets.

Remember the old fashioned gardens next to the farmhouse... remember that they are always fenced with pickets?? I think that is probably why.

We use the deer netting cut in half (to save money). They hate it, because they LOVED to bug hunt and dirt bathe in the garden when we first tilled it up. I did use landscape staples every two yards or so along the bottom. It's really a low profile fencing, and it's cheap!! Our garden is 45 x 90.

We use a length of welded wire for the "doors."

we have a fairly small garden(maybe 20x20), and my birds are young right now and they havent shown any interest, but here's my plan:
right now there are posts and 3ft. hogwire fencing around it, if they aren't deterred by that, Lowe's sells wildlife netting at a fair price, I'm just gonna run some of that over the top

Great thread! My neighbor will be planting a very small garden (only 3 rows) and I know that my chickens will get into his garden, so I I will cover the damages (in advance) by buying material and fencing and having someone enclose his garden before his vegetables begin to grow. I'm being proactive because I know it's coming. My chickens free range and sometimes will go in his yard to eat grass and bugs. My chickens will have a field day in his garden if I don't build his something to protect his veggies. I would also love to see chicken proof garden fencing.

I keep my new planting areas WET, spraying often during the day. my chickens don't like the wet soil for their dirt baths, then walk off in search of dry dirt. Try setting up a big old bin filled with a few inches of plain, dry dirt, those chickens will soon be lining up for their turn in the tub!
