So I got 7 chicks all pullets yesturday, and four ducklings. Their all in the brooder together, but they have a divider so the ducks are all on one side. I'm feeding chick starter and duck starter. I put some electrolyte supplement in the water for the chicks. So my one chick had poo stuck to its vent. I washed it off, but just below its vent more was stuck on another piece of skin, dont know what the skin is, its not on the anatomy... but I couldn't get it off... It was fine today but all a sudden it started pooing a LOT and then started breathing heavily and not moving... It's very weak and tryed drinking but it's not looking good.

Anyone know what it could be or anything I could do for it? It's only 2 days old... :(
Thanks. Asap responses would be GREAT!

yea it sure does.. She looks so uncomfortable, wish their was something i could do for her... I don't think its too hot, its about 92 F right now, and the chicks and ducks aren't crowded away, some are actually right under the warmest area, so I don't know..

Thanks for the advise :) She left us last night, It happened so fast :(
But it's a learning experiance so i'm going to try everything to try to prevent it from happening to the other little ones. They're all jumping around today, and the ducks already look like they've grown! lol
Still don't know what it was that caused her death tho...

When it happens like that on a newborn it is called failure to thrive. :( It is not uncommon but it still hurts....:hugs

I'm sorry for your loss

I just wanted to post a little FYI..the 'poo' stuck below her vent was likely her umbilicus scab. If you had managed to dislodge it, her intestines would have come out along with it :( More than one of us have learned this lesson the hard way.

The chord can let infection into the little peeper. The egg yolk which is still in her can get bacteria in it, killing the chick from the inside out. The time period it takes to kill the tyke is about 2-3 days. I learned this from expierience.
