One of our chickens has become lethargic and a little wobbly over the past week. Her laying has been effected & she laid a soft shell egg at one point. We thought she may have had an egg stuck so we tried to treat that but she laid. Her crop looks swollen so we attempted to treat that but nothing came out. We can't figure it out!!! Please help!!!

Is your hen new to your yard, or have you added any new chickens lately? If she is laying, she should be immune to coccidiosis already, but an older hen can become infected by a different strain (there are 9) that she isn't used to. Symptoms are lethargy, poor appetite, sitting puffed up, diarrhea, and ruffled feathers. Treatment is Corid (amprollium) for 5-7 days.Another cause could be worms, mites causing severe anemia, or a crop issue. Sour crop can happen at the same time as another problem like coccidiosis. Her crop can be full duing the day, but it should be empty first thing in the morning. Here is some info on crop problems: http://www.tillysnest.com/2012/01/crop-issues.html

No new chickens and we have had her for about 6mo. We tried emptying her crop but there isn't anything. Now we are thinking some sort of respiratory infection. It does look like her throat is swollen and she seems to struggle breathing, so we are giving her tetracycline and live yogurt. Do you think this is a good treatment or do you have any other suggestions?

We have been keeping Thelma (our sick chicken) in a kennel and syringe feeding her the water w/ the tetracycline in it for 3 days now. She seems a tiny bit better but she has trouble walking & is still puffy. If we change the med to the Corid, will it be okay since she has been getting a diff med? We just want her better, please help!
