Hello

I posted a picture of ,y 1 day old that hatched in our coop last week Sunday.
The little guy is not growing as he should, sits all the time and is limping when he walks.
He looks like he is very sick.
Any suggestions? Should I take him into a vet can they help?

Thank you

Paul

What breed are you talking about? is mama keeping it warm? very important that new ducklings stay warm. I get him some Poultry vitamins and some niacin to add extra to his water 100-150mgs to 1 gallon of water then put into waterers. it will help with leg weakness or could this be an injury? have you seen the lil one eating? By all means if you can afford a vet and know of one that is knowledgeable in waterfowl then take him. we're any other ducklings hatched along with this one?

Hi, and welcome.

What is he being fed? Many ducklings seem to be sensitive to low niacin in their diet, such as with a chick starter.

I would:

give gro-gel or sav-a-chick
start vitamin-electrolyte-probiotic mix in the water twice a week
add 100 mg niacin per gallon of water for at least two weeks, see what happens. If he gets better I would keep up with the niacin water for another eight weeks.

Thanks for the help

It does eat and drink,I have them on chick starter it is a blue runner or possibly a mix of runner and mallard.
I took it from mom of 6 ducklings only 2 have survived they keep stepping on them and killing them.
They are in the kitchen in a large reptile type aquirum with a heat lamp all of the others are fine.
I have him with the one other that made it plus 4 Black Swedish ducklings, 4-5 days old.
I will try the niacin and the other products you have listed.
I can afford a vet no problem but where to find one in my area ? St Clair MI.

If you have a vet that you use for your other pets, maybe start there ask them if they treat waterfowl if not maybe they could give you a reference to another vet that does, or look under Avain Vets in your yellow pages. a lot of larger cities have them. I'm glad you have removed the ducklings if they are getting trampled, it happens. how are the other ducklings treating it? make sure it can get to the water and food and that no one is picking on it, because stress can cause problems of their own. please let us know how it's doing .

It is amazing the others huddle around it as to protect it.
I am going to try to the vitamins, I will keep all updated.

Thank you for the help, my little one is doing much better and growing quickly
