Help.... sick hen

Sadie...are the droppings runny?
sometimes the green color indicates she's not eating enough..
what "treats" did she eat?

try separating her, and giving her some layer feed, plain yogurt cooked egg yolk, and a little water cooked oatmeal..
make it crumbly, not soupy.
and also have just plain layer feed..no grains no veggies, no corn/scratch.

do a good check on the crop..feel for any lumps or grainy feeling.

check for any wheezing.

describe how she is walking..is it kind of upright like a penguin?
or hunched?

has she been wormed?

Henry..try the above..
and describe the droppings..color and consistency.

My hen finally pooped this morning. It is not runny. It is a blackish color with some white in it almost normal but shaped different. Looking real close it looks like a bunch of rabbit dropping pressed together. It is not shaped the same as my other hens when comparing. The color is almost the same. She has pooped 3 times since about 6:00 P.M. yesterday. She is eating and drinking today and standing upright with the tail feathers up also. Her comb and wattles are still a nice red color. She has not laid an egg today. I have her in a hutch outside near the other birds. I want to let her out but I want to see if she lays an egg today. I'm still waiting and seeing.

sadie, how is your hen doing? Mine almost looks normal. But still watching her. No egg yet. I have a couple more questions.

(1) If they have a sour crop, will they continue to eat and drink?

(2) if they are eggbound, will they continue to poop?

Henry'schickens, I'm glad to hear she's feeling better! I'm rather hesitant to say this because it doesn't seem to happen in chickens very often, but it sounds like she was constipated. I'd make sure she's drinking plenty of water.

(2) if they are eggbound, will they continue to poop?

Yes. I'd still keep an eye on her, but if she is improving just from having bowel movements, that might have been the problem.

Thanks for your reply. I can only hope she was just constipated.

and nothing else serious. I was trying to think what she ate differently the day before and I wondered if this was the cause: My DD was cracking pecans and feeding them to the chickens, maybe she had too many? She has plenty of water and food. I still wonder if I should let her our to free range?

Roxys poo is very runny
as far as treats they got a head of lettuce to play with
and in the afternoon they get scratch
today they got leftover lettuce from a bag o salad
and I made them oatmeal

They love the oatmeal and she ate plenty
I always give them the treats in the afternoon so
they eat their layer crumbles first.

She walkes with her tail down and her but lookes like she
is walking around with a full diaper on. She is kind of crouched
She doesn't stick her head out and up like she is straining.

I have not wormed my girls yet this year. but I got her in august
and I don't know when she was wormed before I got her

Her crop today felt normal not lumpy or grainey

She is not wheezing

I did seperate her this afternoon. That upset her but what are ya
gonna do. And when I got home this afternoon, I noticed she was
one of the first to run to door to greet me.

Henry Im glad your girl is feeling better!

Sadie...I can tell you that some time ago I gave my chickens some lettuce and greens from a bagged salad..
and they did get the runs pretty bad..so I stopped giving them any of that.
also..lettuce will cause runny droppings also..

I'd limit the lettuce treats..and try some darker greens..LOL
(such as cabbage/broccoli/kale/turnip, etc.) but very little.
some hens are more effected then others..
maybe she eats more then her share, or is just more sensitive to it.

try removing all veggies and scratch from her for a couple days and see if she's better.

Ok she has been seperated and today the tail is upright more often
Today they got kale for a treat.
I do switch the treats every day unless i have leftovers
But I always give them veggies.
I dont think it has anything to do with eggbound or sour crop.
Its almost like her butt has fallen
Do chickens get hernias?

Hey guess what I found after searching several hours online? I finally found the poultry protector concentrate!! You dont have to buy just the spray anymore...you can buy the concentrate! I found it at Fleming Outdoors...too bad Manna Pro stopped selling it. Monte
