Help!!!!! Sick Lethargic Chicken! Maybe egg bound!

For giggles, check the feed and make sure there's no lumps in that. Here right now it is so humid, the feed is molding right in the bags! I just had to throw out 2 1/2 full bags because of mold starting. I just opened these 2 days ago. She could also have had an egg that didn't form right. I can't remember what they are called, but essentially, the shell stays liquid and comes out that way. I've seen it a couple of times in my older girls but once I had someone else tell me what it was I never bothered researching it. Sorry. Something you could try if this does come back..use the recipe above for the water and vinegar and just gently squirt it into her vent. Then as I said give her a probiotic.

No the feed is very dry. It could never get moist... Im in Nevada. Yep desert heat and dryness. Brownie is improving though and I think she'll pull through this. But she just has to lay an egg! I have no idea once again.

If she isn't laying and you know there is nothing stuck inside her, then the calcium would be something to try. When it happened to me I used a human 500mg Calcium with 400iu D vitamin, chewable, crushed and mixed with a small amount of water, maybe 1/2 cup. This was the only water given until I knew she had taken it all in. You only need to do this once a day. You could also use just plain old Tums. The ones I have right in front of me have 750 mg of calcium carbonate each. The ones I used, the calcium with D, have Calcium Carbonate and the Dicalcium Phosphate. The D and the phosphate are what make the calcium readily absorbed by the body but if I didn't have these I would try the Tums. 1 maybe 2xs a day just so you know you are getting the right absorbtion. The ones with the D you would only do once as D is a fat soluble vitamin and could build to toxic levels if too much is given.

Hi, I have a hen who sounds like she is in a similar situation. Noticed on Thursday that she was hiding in the corner of run and not moving too well. When she did try to walk it looked like she has somehow injured her legs or maybe a wing. I have her secluded from rest of flock in coop and she is only eating when i give her special treats like greens or bread or a worm. And no drinking. She has poop all around her bum but I think it is because she has just been sitting in it. I got to check her vent today and it is not prolapsed and there is no smell.

So, would an egg bound hen also look like she was having trouble moving and walking? Every once in awhile she just stops and sits down but is otherwise alert. She has not laid in 4 days.

You need to check them, both of you. Gently run your fingers down from front to vent and see if you can feel any lumps. Since they're bottoms are a bit nasty anyways a good soaking in warm, not cool, water will help with that and also make it easier to see if there is anything inside them. If you do find something, give the calcium. It works to make the muscles work properly to expell the egg as well as build up the hen's reserves needed for shell making. Pictures would be good. There are other things that can cause these symptoms and if you can find nothing to make you think a binding, it's time to start looking for something else.

A couple of weeks ago ... one of my Barrds was waddling funny and she would stop and if she bent over, I could see an egg starting to come out but I couldn't catch her to put her into the coop. The next day, she came out of the coop and when I went to look, I saw the biggest egg I had ever seen. She seemed fine but a few hours later, she was standing in the water pan and when I went over, didn't even move. I knew something was wrong so I took her into the house, called a friend who said it sounded like she was eggbound. She seemed to be dying so I googled eggbound and did the warm water bath and had to slide my fingers up inside and feel for eggs. I ended up getting one out and she seemed to really perk up. I kept her warm with towels from the dryer but when I had to go feed the Alpacas, I handed her to my son, went for my shoes and my son yelled but by the time I got to them, she had died. I held her and cried my heart out. I had done my best, the best I knew from no experience but now after reading on this thread, I now know a whole lot more ...................... my heart felt thanks for all of you who have imparted your wisdom.

I cannot tell you how sorry i am to have read this. Oh my heart is breaking for you and yours right now. I have two things in my med kit that I am never without. Calcium with vitamin D and vitamin E for prolapse. I am so very sorry I couldn't have helped you with your poor girl.
