help! sick peacock

He may have blackhead. He is hunched and lethargic. Eyes and nose are clear. I saw some yellow droppings that could have been his. My petsmart does not have fishzole, but I have some metronidazole tablets for my dogs. I assume that I can crush this into some water. Any advise would be appreciated.

You NEED to read my post below (Thread titled Sick & Lethargic). I lost 2 birds in 2 days. They showed symptoms for 4 hours or less and were dead. Get them started on Baytril, AND Metronidozol. STAT.

How much does he weigh? How many mg's are your tablets? Treatment, according to the AAAP Disease Manual is 30mg/kg by mouth for five days. Make sure that he gets at least 30mg/kg. If you need help with the math, let me know. Mine just started showing "the signs" again and have started another round of treatment. One must act fast or they will die. PM me if you need an immediate response. I'd hate to see another person lose a chick... There have been way too many since I joined.

Very important... Give by mouth, NOT in water!

He is a two yr old who freeranges. So I am going to have to catch him.

I was going to disolve the tablets in water and try to get the meds down him that way.
I will update in the am, when I get home (working night shift) with the mg on the tablets.

If he's Blackhead sick, catching him will be the least of your worries. He will have deteriorated overnight. You're going to need to isolate him, and keep him warm and comfortable. If you have other peacocks, they will be getting sick shortly, as well.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but, I started with 4. In 2 days, 2 were dead, and the other 2 were on their way until I got treating them figured out.

Just catch him and give him the pill(s) by mouth. Birds won't usually drink enough of the medicated water, if that's what you were thinking of doing.

And PeaDaddy wasn't the only one to have losses to blackhead... Shellp lost 2, Kuntrygirl lost 1 and crj lost 1.
