Hello, I am new to the forum and just incubated my first lot of chicks. The first one is perfectly healthy and happy, the second one came 24 hours later and the egg shell was still stuck to its butt, after about 12 hours the other one finally helped it get it off as I didn't want to open the incubator yet. However the chick appeared quite sickly so I removed them from the incubator and he had hard stuff all over its butt and something conical protruding, we tried soaking it and removed some of it but there is still something protruding, possibly the vent? He is less than 24 hours old and a Lavender Orpington.

I have some pictures but cannot see how to upload them, will see if I can do it after I post this, I appreciate any feedback.

WELCOME TO BYC!!

Sounds like pasty butt. To treat it run some warm water over it, whip it off with a rag and apply some coconut oil or vaseline to it. Put some dry gatorade or ACV in the water.

Thank you! I had thought the same thing but it just looks so severe, wish I could post a picture but it says I don't have permission :-(
Another quick question, its been 48 hours since the first chick hatched there are 6 more eggs in there and one is moving very slightly. How much longer should I wait before giving up on them -it's my first incubate and I know I messed it up a bit letting the humidity go too high and then too low. Thanks again.

I've never incubated before but I would give them at least anther two days if they are moving. You should ask here about that https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/5/incubating-hatching-eggs
