When I came home from work today my silkie, Cotton, was in her box, I thought, well it is warm today, 70*. But a little while ago she was still jsut sitting there, and when we picked her up a rubbery egg thing was hanging out so I pulled it out. She did drink some water after that. Is she egg bound? Will she feel better soon? Do you think she is sick?

Sounds like a mistake happened in her reproductive tract. keep an eye on her and make sure she eats and drinks. If you could make sure nothing is stuck inside, that would also be good, but in this case looks like you pulled it all out. Sometimes mistakes happen and she could have layed the yolk outside or something and then just the rubber shell got stuck.

Is she a new layer? If not, does she have free choice oyster shell? What else is in her diet?

Is she getting crushed oyster shell? Maybe give her some crushed egg shell?? Looks like she needs calcium. Is she a new layer?? Just watch and make sure she is eating and drinking. Im sure she will be fine. This happens with new layers sometimes.

I have only had her for about 6 weeks and I have no idea how old she is. She's the one I rescued from storm/dog Jan 8. It took a month before she started laying again. She eats lay crumble and scratch and table scraps. Better get some oyster shell huh?!! I';m going out to go look at her again right now. Maybe I will bring her in house tonite.

She drank a lot of water and ate a few bites of crumble. How do you check if there is still something in vent? I don't want to push it farther in.

i crushed eggs shells and she is going to town on them, so maybe she is going to be ok? It scared me when she was lethargic and that thing hanging out, I've had other chickens occasionally lay rubber egg and they didn't act different or anything. She is still sleeping in house tonite anyway!!
