ANother thing that will work to relax reptiles and herps (or calm them) is to pop them in the fridge for a few minutes.
The hard thing about snakes is that they manage to get twisted around every little crack and corner. SO they are hard to get out of things.

Putting the snake in a dark, covered enclosure can work just as well.
